I Wake Up and Write Down My Dreams
However, despite being fantastic or seemingly revelatory we often don’t understand or remember our dreams, and while they occasionally leave lasting impressions they are inherently fleeting.
Some of our most revered luminaries across the ages were famous for keeping bedside journals and writing down their dreams. They yearned to record their freshest recollections and details of their visions before they faded away. Similarly, the artists included in the exhibition explore the dreamscape in their practices, and put pencil to paper to create new worlds.
The resulting works are fantastic but difficult to explain. Several pieces in the show contain compositions seemingly absurdist in nature, some feature fantastic characters that have sprung to life, while others are populated by the fragments of the familiar, and incongruent juxtapositions that act as riddles, or perhaps just echoes of the day gone by.
No Gallery was an ambiguously commercial gallery space that was established in Los Angeles, California by Casey Gleghorn, in 2019. The space later operated in the lowest of the Lower East Side of Manhattan from 2021–2025. Founded with the intention of curating exhibitions capable of pushing the boundaries of contemporary programming, No presented works dedicated to a nuanced exploration of extant social, personal and cultural paradigms.
