The platypus is the animal that already looks assembled — mammal, bird, and reptile borrowed from freely — and it appalled the naturalists who first catalogued it. Nature got there before anybody could be blamed for it.
So this drawing is the control specimen for the group. If an authored organism looks like a mistake, this is a reminder that inheritance produces the same result without a permit.
